Rockwool Attic Insulation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Rockwool attic insulation in Ventura, with most full-attic projects running $1,800 to $4,200 depending on square footage and current R-value. We keep Rockwool batts and boards on the truck for same-day or next-day installation across Ventura, Oxnard, and Camarillo. The usual story we hear starts with a homeowner noticing upstairs rooms that won’t hold temperature, or a utility bill that climbed 30% in one season without any other explanation.

Rockwool is stone wool insulation, made from basalt rock and recycled slag spun into dense fibers. In Ventura attics, it does something fiberglass doesn’t: it keeps its shape and R-value when the marine layer pushes moisture through the attic in June and the Santa Anas bake it dry in October. That stability is exactly why homeowners choose it, and why we’re comfortable recommending it by name alongside Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber. Alden Insulation Ventura is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rockwool, but we install their products every week and know their specs cold.
Which Rockwool Models This Applies To
Rockwool attic insulation comes in a few distinct forms, and matching the right one matters more than most homeowners expect. The Comfortbatt line is the workhorse for attic floors and sloped ceilings: semi-rigid batts sized for 16″ and 24″ on-center framing, available R-15, R-23, and R-30 depths. Safe’n’Sound is a denser, fire-rated batt intended for interior walls and floors, but we see it in Ventura attics occasionally where a previous contractor bought whatever was on sale. It is not an attic floor product, and if that’s what’s up there, it should come out.
For attic rooflines and cathedral ceilings, Rockwool Comfortboard 80 is the rigid board option, specified by thickness from 1″ to 4″ and intended for exterior continuous insulation or interior roof deck applications. The mistake to avoid: assuming any Rockwool product drops into any attic. The R-value per inch differs between Comfortbatt and Comfortboard, and the vapor behavior differs too. If you’re matching an existing install, pull a batt and read the printed product label, or measure the stud bay width before you buy. We carry both 16″ and 24″ widths on the truck, plus Comfortboard thicknesses at the warehouse in Ventura. Reflectix radiant barrier is something else entirely, a foil product, and we’ll tell you plainly if your attic needs that instead of or alongside the wool.
Signs Your Rockwool Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms swing hot and cold faster than they used to. Rockwool doesn’t settle like blown fiberglass, but water intrusion from a roof leak or failed bathroom vent compresses it and kills the R-value. Once compressed, it doesn’t spring back.
- You can see daylight or feel drafts through ceiling penetrations. This usually means the original install skipped air sealing, or the batts around can lights and plumbing vents were cut poorly. Air moving through the insulation wipes out most of its performance, even with Rockwool in place.
- Moldy or musty smell from the attic after rain. Rockwool is hydrophobic, meaning it doesn’t absorb water into the fibers themselves, but water can pool between batts and against the roof deck. In Ventura’s damp winter months, a slow roof leak will show up as a smell before it shows as a stain.
- Rodent activity in the attic. Rats in Ventura attics love tunneling through stone wool. It doesn’t have the loose, dusty texture of fiberglass, so they treat it like a burrow. Frass, droppings, and chewed kraft facing on the batts are the tell.
- Higher cooling bills with no change in usage. Rockwool’s R-value holds steady for decades, but if the install was undersized for the rafter depth, or gaps were left around the attic hatch, you’re paying to cool a room that’s leaking air through the ceiling all summer.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical 1,500-square-foot attic in Ventura, budget between $1,800 and $3,200 for full Rockwool batt replacement, including removal of the old material when needed. Larger attics, cathedral ceilings requiring Comfortboard, or projects that reveal deck damage or rodent contamination push toward $4,200 or higher. We give a written price before any work starts, and the number you approve is the number on the invoice. No revision at the door, no surprise line item after we open the hatch.
The labor quote includes pulling the old insulation, air sealing the ceiling plane where accessible, laying the new Rockwool to the specified R-value, and cleanup to the point you’d never know we were there except for the quieter, cooler house. Materials are itemized separately: you’ll see exactly what the batts cost and what the labor costs. Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If the work fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. That includes a free second visit if anything we installed doesn’t perform.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your Rockwool attic yourself with a dust mask, gloves, and a headlamp. Check for compressed batts, dark water staining, rodent sign, and gaps around the hatch and penetrations. That’s information worth having before you call anyone, and we’ll respect you for having it. What’s not safe is moving batts around to reach a suspected roof leak in a steep-pitch attic without a stable walking surface, or pulling material near recessed can lights that may have old, non-IC-rated housings buried in wool. In Ventura’s older Westside homes, we’ve pulled back insulation and found wiring that no homeowner should be working around. That’s a professional’s job.
If you see signs of water or rodent damage, call us at (341) 895-7513 before you move anything. The quote is free, and we’ll tell you honestly whether you need replacement or whether the existing Rockwool can stay put with targeted repairs.
FAQs
Rockwool holds its R-value for the life of the building when kept dry and undisturbed. In our Ventura climate, the realistic failure points are water intrusion and rodents, not the material breaking down. If it’s dry and uncompressed, 40-year-old Rockwool still performs at spec.
Isolated compressed or stained sections can be selectively replaced with matching batts, and we do that when the damage is limited. If more than a third of the attic shows water or rodent damage, full removal and reinstall costs less per square foot and gives you a clean envelope. Call (341) 895-7513 and we’ll give you a straight read on which applies.
A standard single-story Ventura attic with full removal and Rockwool batt installation takes one day for a two-person crew. Cathedral ceilings with Comfortboard or attics with extensive air sealing can run two days. We schedule a specific arrival window, not a half-day range.
We keep Comfortbatt R-15, R-23, and R-30 in both 16″ and 24″ widths stocked at our Ventura warehouse, and our trucks carry common widths for same-day jobs. Comfortboard is available same-week. If you know your existing product and dimensions, we can confirm stock on the phone before you schedule.
Bryce Holloway has been measuring insulation jobs for over two decades, and his rule never changes: measure the house, match the material, do the job right the first time. If your Rockwool attic isn’t doing its job, we’ll figure out why and give you a written price to fix it. Call (341) 895-7513 for a free estimate, answered by a live person any hour of the day.
