GreenFiber Radiant Barrier Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide
We stock GreenFiber-compatible radiant barrier materials on our trucks and install them throughout Ventura, with most jobs running between $900 and $2,400 depending on attic square footage and whether we’re adding barrier to an existing GreenFiber insulation bed or starting fresh. Same-day and next-day installation is available in most Ventura neighborhoods, and every job gets a written price before we start. Most homeowners discover their radiant barrier has failed when August rolls around and the upstairs rooms won’t hold temperature no matter how hard the AC runs. The foil facing delaminates, tears at the staple points, or sags away from the roof deck, and suddenly that reflective layer isn’t doing its job anymore.

We’re an independent Ventura insulation contractor, not a GreenFiber dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’re free to tell you when a barrier is worth replacing, when it’s not, and what material will hold up best in a coastal attic that sees salt air and summer temperatures that regularly push past 85 degrees in the roof cavity.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
GreenFiber radiant barrier products come in two main configurations: the double-sided foil facing laminated to the company’s blown-in cellulose fiber, and standalone foil sheets designed to staple over the rafters. Model numbers like the RB-14 and RB-19 sheet goods are the most common we remove in Ventura attics, usually installed between 2005 and 2015 alongside GreenFiber’s Insulmax or Sanctuary cellulose. The quickest way to identify what you have is to look at the foil facing itself. GreenFiber prints its name and the product code along the edge of the sheet, usually within six inches of the selvage. If the printing is gone from age or moisture, measure the foil thickness. Original GreenFiber sheet barrier runs 1.5 mil to 2 mil foil with a kraft or polymer scrim backing. Cheaper substitutes use 1 mil or less and tear clean at the staple line.
The compatibility gotcha we see often: GreenFiber’s foil-sheet barrier was designed to work with their loose-fill insulation as a system. The barrier sits against the roof deck, and the cellulose below it benefits from the reflected heat. If someone blew in fiberglass over the top of the old barrier, it compresses the foil and kills the air gap that makes radiant reflection work. In a Ventura attic, that air gap matters more than people think. Without it, the foil is just an expensive vapor retarder doing nothing for heat gain.
Signs Your GreenFiber Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing
- Foil sagging or drooping between rafters. The staple holes tear through over years of thermal expansion and contraction. Ventura’s temperature swings between cool nights and hot afternoons put real stress on the foil, and a sagging barrier loses its reflective angle entirely.
- Tears around the perimeter or at seams. Rodents, roof repairs, and careless storage all take a toll. A ripped barrier leaks heat through the gap, and in our experience the damage is usually worse where roofers walked the deck and knocked foil loose from underneath.
- White or hazy oxidation on the foil surface. Salt air from the coast accelerates this. Once the surface oxidizes, reflectivity drops from around 95% down to 60% or lower, and the barrier stops doing what you paid for.
- Upstairs rooms that run 5 to 8 degrees hotter than the rest of the house. This is the symptom that gets people calling us in July and August. The AC runs longer, the bill climbs, and the barrier underneath it all has quietly stopped reflecting.
- Insulation has settled or been disturbed above the barrier line. If GreenFiber cellulose has settled below the recommended R-value for Ventura’s climate zone (R-38 minimum for attics), the whole system underperforms. We measure current R-value on every visit because half the time the barrier is fine and the insulation itself is the culprit.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Most GreenFiber radiant barrier installation jobs in Ventura run $900 to $2,400 installed. The spread depends on attic size, access, and whether the old barrier needs full removal first. A simple 1,200-square-foot attic with good access and no teardown runs at the lower end. A 2,000-square-foot attic with a 20-year-old barrier that has to be pulled down, bagged, and hauled before new foil goes up runs toward the top.
The written price includes the barrier material, labor, disposal of the old foil, and any staple or fastening work. We don’t charge extra for the written quote, and the number we put in front of you before work starts is the number on the invoice. Every GreenFiber-compatible barrier install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, in writing. If the barrier sags, tears, or fails within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That includes a free second visit if something isn’t right the first time.

DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect your own attic. Put on a dust mask, take a flashlight, and look for the signs we listed above: sagging foil, torn staple lines, oxidation, missing sections. What you should not do is climb around on ceiling joists pulling down damaged foil and stapling new barrier overhead while balancing on a ladder. That work happens above your head, in a hot enclosed space, on framing that wasn’t meant to be walked. We’ve pulled more than one homeowner out of a situation where a foot went through drywall or a slipped staple gun drove a fastener into an electrical wire.
Radiant barrier installation looks simple on paper. Doing it right means proper air gap spacing, correct staple pattern, clean seams, and knowing where the barrier ends and the ventilation begins. In a coastal Ventura attic, improper installation traps moisture against the roof deck, and that causes problems the original barrier was never going to have. If you want the job done once, by a background-checked crew that arrives in uniform inside the scheduled window, call us at (341) 895-7513. Bryce Holloway has been doing this work for over two decades, and he runs every Ventura job the same way: measure the house, match the material, do the job right the first time.
FAQs
A properly installed GreenFiber radiant barrier lasts 15 to 25 years in a Ventura attic, though coastal salt air can shorten that by oxidizing the foil surface faster than inland installations. If your barrier is over 15 years old and showing white oxidation or sagging, it’s near the end of its useful life. Call (341) 895-7513 and we’ll inspect it and give you a straight answer on whether it needs replacing or has years left.
Small tears under six inches can often be patched with foil tape and re-stapling, and we do that as a repair when the surrounding material is still sound. Large tears, widespread oxidation, or sagging across multiple rafter bays usually means full replacement is the honest call. We’ll tell you which one you need after an inspection, not before.
Most Ventura radiant barrier installations take one day, including removal of the old barrier when needed. A larger attic or tight access can push it to a second day. We’ll give you the timeline in writing with the price, and the crew shows up inside the scheduled window, not a vague half-day range.
We keep GreenFiber-compatible barrier sheet and the related fastening materials stocked on our trucks, along with Reflectix products for specific applications where a different facing makes more sense. That means when we quote your job, the material is already in hand, not on order. Call (341) 895-7513 for a free estimate, and we’ll confirm what we have available for your attic size before we schedule.
