Insulation Before & After in Ventura, CA

Walk into most Ventura attics and you’ll see the same story: matted fiberglass, gaps around can lights, and brittle material that stopped doing its job years ago. We could describe what a proper insulation job looks like, but a before and after tells you more in two photos than we could in two pages. Here’s a look at recent projects around Ventura, from Midtown ranch houses to beach-adjacent builds near the Avenue, where the change in R-value and comfort was immediate. The work below is our work, done to The Garrison Standard.

Recent Transformations

Blown-In Insulation: Midtown Ranch Attic with R-19 Batts

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Before: original fiberglass batts, roughly R-19, with visible gaps along the eaves. After: blown-in insulation brought the attic to R-38.

The attic in this Midtown Ventura home had the original batts from the 1980s, compressed to about R-19 and missing entirely in spots. We removed the old material, air sealed around the top plates and can lights, then blew in Owens Corning fiberglass to R-38 across the full attic floor. The homeowner noticed the change that first night: the furnace ran less, and the rooms facing west stopped heating up by 4 p.m. This is the most common before and after we see in Ventura, where older homes were built for a milder climate that’s less mild every summer.

Attic Insulation Removal: Rodent Damage in a Ventura Avenue Bungalow

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Before: contaminated insulation, compacted and torn. After: clean decking, sanitized, with new Johns Manville blown-in installed.

Rodents had gotten in through a gap at the roofline and turned the insulation into bedding. You don’t top off that kind of damage; you take it out and start clean, which is what we did here. Bryce Holloway and the crew removed every bag of contaminated material, sanitized the decking, sealed the entry point, and blew in Johns Manville fiberglass at R-30 with new baffles at the soffits. The family said the house smelled different within a day. That’s a before and after you can’t get by adding more on top of a problem.

Attic Insulation: Vaulted Ceiling Retrofit in East Ventura

BeforeBeforeAfterAfter
Before: vaulted ceiling with no accessible attic. After: Rockwool batts installed against the roofline, bringing the room to code.

This East Ventura home had a vaulted ceiling over the living room, and there was no attic to blow into. The room baked in summer and went cold in winter. We pulled the drywall at the ridge, fit Rockwool batts into the rafter bays, and reinstalled the ceiling with a proper vapor barrier. R-30 where there’d been nothing. The difference in that living room was the kind you feel at 6 a.m. in January, when the floor isn’t a cold shock anymore.

Blown-In Insulation: Over-Garage Bedroom in Northbank

Before: an over-garage room with rockwool scraps between joists. After: dense-packed GreenFiber cellulose at R-30.

The bedroom over this Northbank garage never held temperature. The builder had left little more than scraps between the joists, and the room sat over an unconditioned space. We dense-packed the floor cavity with GreenFiber cellulose, which fills the odd gaps a batt never will, and brought the room to R-30. The homeowner called it a different room the next week. Over-garage rooms are one of those Ventura house-plan quirks that almost always need this fix.

Insulation Removal: Recalled Loose-Fill in a Saticoy Home

Professional technician installing blown-in attic insulation
Before: old loose-fill insulation, uneven and full of dust. After: clean attic deck with Knauf blown-in at R-38.

A Saticoy homeowner called after a remodel revealed loose-fill that was decades old, uneven, and choked with dust. We vacuumed it all out, which is a messier job than most people expect, then blew in Knauf fiberglass across the entire attic floor at R-38. The before photos looked like a dirt floor; the after photos look like a fresh snowfall, even and full. If your attic has loose material from before 2002, that’s the comparison we’d want you to see.
